The Australian Medical Student Journal (AMSJ) is an academic publication that accepts submissions from all Australian medical students, as well as students studying medically-related disciplines. It is the first undertaking of its kind in Australia. It is staffed entirely by medical students and is currently produced from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney.
With the increasing presence of principles of evidence-based medicine and compulsory research projects in Australian medical curricula, there has never been a more sensible time for a national student journal to be launched. The AMSJ strives for the academic rigour and quality of a major academic journal, but publishes content that will be of particular appeal to a medical student readership.
Australia now has 20 medical schools across 7 states and territories. 15 of these were represented in the AMSJ’s inaugural issue.
The AMSJ was concieved at UNSW, and from early 2009, medical students Matt Schiller, Timothy Yang and Hassan Ahmad were responsible for making the idea a reality, with consultation with the Dean and other senior staff of UNSW’s Faculty of Medicine beginning in mid-2009. These three students now form the journal’s Executive Board. The journal now has a volunteer staff of 22 medical students.
Both the online and print versions of the AMSJ are registered with the Australian International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSN) Agency and the National Library of Australia (NLA):
